In 1997 the Austrian Frederick and Lillian Kiesler Private Foundation acquired the descendant’s estate of Frederick Kiesler. More than 5.500 photographs form a significant part of the estate. Among these photographic works are private snapshots, portraits and architectural photographs. Kiesler deliberately used certain photos for his image building, such as pictures which show the artist in his creative process. Also illustrious get-togethers among artist friends are displayed in a great number of photographs.

Kiesler’s importance as key figure in the European avant-garde and the American art scene in the 20th century is manifested in his artistic cooperation and friendship with famous artists like Marcel Duchamp, Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Max Ernst, Hans Arp, Peggy Guggenheim, etc.

Space and Photography // Exploring space with photography

Seven contemporary photographers have been invited to explore “Space” in its various forms: social space, architectural space, scenic space, atmospheric space, representative space and artistic space. Additionally the artists are asked to refer to the photographic works in the archive of the Frederick Kiesler Foundation. Both the contemporary views of the photographers and the avant-garde photographs of the Frederick Kiesler Foundation are targeting the manifold forms of “Space”.
